DGT exam fees: what it costs and what's included 💶

The official price is easy to find; what nobody tells you is what failing costs. With the pass-rate data in hand, we do both sums.

The official fees (2026)

FeeWhat it coversAmount
2.1Aptitude tests for obtaining a permit (the exam fee: theory + practical)€94.05
2.3Permits issued without practical tests (e.g. some licence exchanges)€28.87
4.3Licence renewal (free from age 70)€24.58
4.4Duplicate licence€20.81
4.5International driving permit€10.51

You pay online at the DGT sede electrónica or in the Mi DGT app, or at a Jefatura; with a driving school, they normally handle it (and bill it inside the package).

The detail that matters: 2 attempts

€94.05 = 2 attempts

Tasa 2.1 gives you two exam attempts. Failing a test uses one; once both are gone, you pay a new fee to keep trying.

What failing costs (according to the data)

Over the last 12 months, 50.5% of permiso B theory exams ended in a fail — and of those who pass, 38.1% needed two or more attempts. Every extra fee is €94.05; every extra month of driving school, considerably more. So the most profitable decision of the whole process isn't hunting a cheaper fee — it's not wasting attempts: book only when the data says you're ready.

TraficoTest tells you your real probability of passing the theory — and refunds your money if, above 90%, you don't pass first time. It's the best-invested fee of the process.

The full budget

On top of the fee, add the psychotechnical certificate (a private medical centre, usually €30–60), driving-school tuition (varies hugely by province) and, if you're doing the theory independently, a test platform — you can start with a free DGT test in English, official format. To compare schools in your province by real results, use the pass-rate search.
